About Me

Hello! My name is Katelyn Overcash, and I chose to create a website that is a summary of my Girl Scout Gold Award. I have been in Girl Scouts for 12 years, and it has been a huge part of my life as long as I can remember.

Fast-forward to my Senior year in high school. I was scrambling to discover a unique idea that I could use for my Girl Scout Gold Award. At the time, I was enrolled in an American Sign Language course at my local high school. I enjoyed the class like most of my fellow classmates, but I just saw it as a class that I needed to pass to be able to graduate high school. As the class progressed, I started to realize how fascinating the language truly was, and enjoyed going over the signs that I learned in class that day. A friend's mother, a teacher at a local elementary school, knew that I was searching for an awesome idea for my Girl Scout Gold Award. As we bounced our ideas back and forth, I had various meetings with different teachers and explored the different classrooms in the school. I eventually came across the Technology Facilitator at the school. Together, we came up with the idea of teaching American Sign Language to first graders. I absolutely loved the idea and was ready to start as soon as possible! Once we chose the first-grade class we wanted to work with and received approval from the Girl Scout Committee, we got started. I developed a lesson plan for each of the days that I was going to be working with the children. In addition, I was able to receive assistance from a fellow classmate who recorded videos and helped me teach the students.

That was the beginning of my wonderful journey of teaching these children. View the tabs labeled, "Days 1-5" and "Days 5-8" to see the day by day progress.
